Synopsis:
Medical emergency mastery was developed to teach dentists and their staff how to recognize and manage medical emergencies in their practice so they can best protect their patient’s health and safety. Adequate emergency preparation involves four key areas: A properly constructed medical history, a working knowledge of the signs and symptoms of the eight most common medical emergencies, construction of a straightforward, easily reproducible emergency drug kit and staff training that can be accomplished with as few as three responders. Participants will be provided with the tools to customize a medical history that is reflective of their patient population. The signs, symptoms and necessary responses for each of the most commonly occurring emergencies will be outlined. Doctors will be able to construct a personalized emergency preparation system that includes only necessary drugs and equipment. Staff training will be outlined in detail, as well as all necessary checklists, review logs and equipment maintenance records.

Educational Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:
  • Objectively evaluate their current medical history form for its ability to obtain necessary information from their patients.
  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of the eight most commonly occurring medical emergencies along with the necessary action steps.
  • Assemble the necessary emergency equipment and supplies for the dental office.
  • Implement staff emergency medical training with as few as three responders.
  • Effectively document any in-office emergency occurrence with accuracy and consistency

This best thing about this course is that it presents a structured, well engineered action plan for dealing with in-office medical emergencies. Catharine did a great job of breaking things down to their simplest level, organizing a thought process and system for the moments most of us simply hope won't happen. Think about it -- most of us already know the basics from this course from our early training. But how many offices really have an action plan in the event something happens? Does each person in your office know what his/her role is? Are you systematic in reviewing your staff's readiness, and in making sure unexpired meds will be there in a known location when you need them? In short, if a patient of yours had a medical emergency today, would she be in good hands, or would panic and chaos ensue? This short video provided an encapsulated review of how to identify and deal with most dental office emergencies. And best of all, it gives great tips for systematizing our response to medical emergencies. When implemented, the recommended system will help give you the peace of mind that you are prepared.
