(A). 4 kcal
(B). 7 kcal
(C). 9 kcal
(D). 90 kcal

Keywords:  fat, 10 g

  • Proteins and carbohydrates produce 4 kcal/g of energy
  • Fat produces 9 kcal/g of energy
  • Alcohol produces 7 kcal/g of energy
  • Vitamins and minerals do not provide energy

Answer: (D). 90 kcal

Was (C). 9 kcal tempting to choose? Probably! This is because our brain is trained to think
“1 g” not “10 g.” That is what see in textbooks! But if you read the question very slowly and caught this “10 g” keyword, you could have minimized your chances of making a mistake. Those types of small tricks are often seen on the dental hygiene board exams (NBDHE, NDHCE). So hopefully this one exercise showed you how careful we need to be.

Now because StudentRDH wants to be better than any other dental hygiene board review program, I would like to pack some more important information that you can learn RIGHT NOW! What’s a protein? What’s a carbohydrate? Let’s find out!

Carbohydrate: Organic compound that contains CHO (carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen). Its main function is to be the body’s primary energy source.

Lipid: Organic compound composed of CHO. Its main functions include:

  • Storing energy. It is the second source of energy after carbohydrates.
  • Maintaining body temperature and protecting
  • Facilitating the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K.
  • Producing satiety (fullness), flavor, and texture to food.

Protein: Organic compound made of CHO and nitrogen. Its main functions include:

  • Assisting in growth, maintenance, construction, and repair of body tissues.
  • Making hormones, enzymes, and antibodies.
  • Serving as an energy source when carbohydrate and fat intake is inadequate.

Nutrition and biochem are included in the NBDHE (if you look at the guidelines). So make sure to understand the basic concepts in nutrition. Also, more importantly, learn the oral conditions that occur as a result of nutritional imbalance. The StudentRDH dental hygiene board review for the NBDHE or NDHCE has an excellent chapter in nutrition that gives you everything you need in bite-sized formats, because nobody wants to read loooooong paragraphs. When it is time to study, maybe you can look at www.StudentRDH.com!

For now, let’s pack our everyday life with good nutrition that gives us the energy to keep going in #DHschool. If you have any questions about the NBDHE/NDHCE (or other dental hygiene board exams) email me at clairej@studentRDH.com
