(A). Immunocompromised patients
(B). Dark-skinned adults
(C). Patients undergoing cancer therapy
(D). Fair-skinned adults

Solar cheilitis, also called actinic cheilitis occurs more commonly in fair-skinned individuals. Here are some more characteristics (bullet point style, that's what we like at StudentRDH dental hygiene boards review courses):

  • The cause of the lesions is related to sun exposure
  • The lesions are commonly present on the lower lip
  • The vermillion borders become pale and the interface of the lip and the skin can sometimes be indistinct.

Answer: (D). Fair-skinned adults

Oral pathology is a big part of the dental hygiene board exam (NBDHE, NDHCE, WREB, CDCA). At StudentRDH, we have a fantastic chapter that features images and bullet point notes about the most important oral pathologies you need to know for the board exams. The textbook you use is also great, but make sure you understand the keywords.

One more thing! You have to understand the correlation between population demographic and pathology. In other words "which population is most likely to be affected by the condition." Let’s review a few more pathologies TODAY:

  • Leukoedema: Mostly affects black adults and smokers
  • Lingual varicosity: Usually seen in elderly patients
  • Melanin pigmentation: Most commonly observed in dark-skinned individuals

Keep building your knowledge and you will soon be ready for the dental hygiene board exam (NBDHE, NDHCE, WREB, CDCA). All your efforts will pay off, so keep pushing! Make sure your friends get StudentRDH Vitamins too! Be the ambassador of success!
