The news of the week includes future of dentistry courtesy of King’s College London, the dangers of vaping, Livionex Inc., Pulpdent Corporation and the World Report list of Best Jobs.
1. This week we saw a preview of the future of dentistry
A paper published in Scientific Reports, described a new method to stimulate stem cells in the pulp leading to tooth repair which was discovered by scientists at King’s College London. They placed an Alzheimer’s drug on a resorbable sponge and inserted into a cavity preparation, leading to the formation of new dentine.
2. Humans continue to demonstrate the dangers of vaping. Stained teeth, exposure to carcinogens and explosions are possible. Andrew Hall of Pocatello, Idaho claims his exploding vape pen caused this damage to his face and the subsequent loss of 7 teeth.
3. Livionex Inc. in Los Gatos, California reported that a clinical study has been completed at the University of California at Irvine that concluded individuals who use the firm’s toothpaste have a significant reduction in plaque levels by disrupting biofilm and slowing formation of new biofilm.
4. Pulpdent Corporation in Watertown, Massachusetts is celebrating its 70th year as a dental materials company. Dr. Burk, who started the company, began marketing a premixed calcium hydroxide paste that is still used by dentists today.
5. A recent U.S. News and World Report list of Best Jobs has dentist listed as number one. According to the report, positive employment growth, a comfortable salary, low unemployment rate and agreeable work-life balance contributed to our top ranking.
