Synopsis:
As clinicians, the hand scaling instruments we use become part of our professional persona. Many hygienists refer to loving or hating certain instruments. It is an emotional attachment. More importantly, maintaining the working edge is a challenge, one that’s a constant source of discussion in the dental hygiene profession.

Bottom line: When we consider what’s best for our patients, there’s only one answer: a sharp, properly angled working edge. However, how to best maintain a consistent edge is a much more complicated matter.

Description of Speaker:
Karen Siebert, BSDH, MA, is a part-time clinical instructor and adjunct faculty, teaching courses in oral pathology and the dental hygiene process for patients presenting with medical concerns or special needs. A clinical educator for American Eagle Instruments, she received her BSDH from the University of Iowa, and a master’s degree in educational leadership from the University of Illinois Springfield. Before fi nding her passion in dental-hygiene education, Siebert practiced clinically, implementing nonsurgical periodontal programs and managing dental hygiene departments in two practices. Her career endeavors have expanded to include writing and presenting curriculum for continuing education courses and webinars, as well as articles focusing on both clinical applications and current technology. She is a member of Careerfusion, ADHA, ADEA and OSAP.
