The news of the week includes Dr. Carl Misch, 3M Deutschland, Dentix in Spain, Zolar Technology & Manufacturing Company Inc., DenMat Holdings LLC and the Kerr Corporation.
1.The dental profession has lost a legend.
Dr Carl Mish died on January 4th after a long battle with cancer. He was a pioneer in implant dentistry and the founder of the Misch International Implant Institute in 1984. He is survived by 6 children and 12 grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the Misch Legacy Endowment.
2. 3M Deutschland has filed a patent infringement lawsuit in Düsseldorf, Germany against Dentsply DeTrey. 3M’s suit alleges that Dentsply’s Prime&Bond Active Universal adhesive dispenser infringes on 3M’s Scotchbond Universal adhesive flip-top dispenser system design.
3. Corporate dental news in Europe: Dentix in Spain received a $208 million long-term credit financing from KKR, a privately owned global investment firm.
Dentix owns and operates 251 dental clinics in Spain, Italy, Mexico & Columbia. These funds will be used to fund expansion in Europe. The firm currently generates $268 million a year in revenue.

4. Zolar Technology & Manufacturing Company Inc. in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada plans to launch its Photon series of soft-tissue diode lasers. Photon lasers weigh around 2 kilograms [4.4 pounds].
5. DenMat Holdings LLC purchased the Fluoridex® product line and brand name from Philips Oral Healthcare. The product line had originally been designed by Discus Dental and then was purchased by Philips. The products, on the market since 1998, include fluoride toothpastes and mouthwash and are dispensed through dental offices.
6. Kerr Corporation, the Orange, California-based member of the KaVo Kerr Group, formed a partnership with Dental Recycling North America Inc. (DRNA) in New York, New York.
This relationship is designed to provide Kerr customers greater awareness of newly issued Environmental Protection Agency regulations in the US. Among the unique benefits available to Kerr customers is a new eight-hour continuing education course. The organizations are also developing a website to instruct dental offices about new EPA standards on mercury and other metals in wastewater.
7. Benex in Switzerland has developed a new tooth extraction device called the BenexExtractor. The company states that the device causes less pain and preserves bone and soft tissue compared to other extraction tools and techniques. The product is manufactured in Germany.
