How to Keep Your Hair Moisturized

When thinking about hair care and having healthy strands, one of the most important factors in maintaining your hair is its moisture. Dry hair can cause a myriad of problems, as well as make your hair appear dull and straw-like. Here are some tips for ensuring your hair is moisturized and looking it's absolute best.
Use Lukewarm or Cold Water
Although everyone loves a good, hot shower, sometimes the temperature of the water can do more harm than good. Warmer water is great for cleaning your hair with shampoo, but steaming hot temperatures have the negative effect of drying out your skin, including your scalp, which can encourage problems like irritation and dandruff. However, when you are rinsing out your conditioner and other products that take time to activate in the shower, it is better to use water with cooler temperatures. This allows your strands to lock in the moisture that your hair shaft receives from the nourishing ingredients in the conditioner. This will also make hair easier to work with and make hair less frizzy and sleeker as well.
Try Sulfate-Free Products
Sulfates are one of the most common ingredients in many types and brands of hair care products. While they can certainly help to clean your hair, sulfates often have more drawbacks than benefits. In the last few decades, salon-grade products that do not have sulfates have become more and more popular. You may be wondering what is sulfate-free shampoo? It is a shampoo that features other compounds that clean and moisturizes your hair, without the damaging effects of sulfates. Sulfates often strip hair of its natural bounce and moisture, leaving hair dry and lackluster after use for several months. Sulfate-free products show much better results for your hair in the long run.
Apply Hydrating Serum
If you are using a deep conditioner and moisturizing shampoo, and your hair still lacks the amount of moisture that you would like, it may be a good idea to use a serum to give it an extra boost. One popular solution is hyaluronic acid, which works best when it is massaged into your scalp, to stimulate moisture and hair growth. You can also put a little bit of the serum into your regular and deep conditioner for another moisturizing element as well. You can get a concentrated version of these types of serums, or there are even spray versions that you can apply to your hair while it is still wet when you get out of the shower or bath. Regularly utilizing a serum like hyaluronic acid will provide much-needed hydration, even when your hair is feeling more dry than normal.
Utilize Heat Protectants
If your daily hairstyling routine includes heat elements such as using a blowdryer, hair straightener, or curling iron, it is imperative to invest in heat protectant products. These form a barrier between your hair and the surface of the hot tools, in order to shield your strands from damage caused by higher temperatures. They contain healthy oils as well as lighter silicones that help to protect your hair without weighing it down from the product. An added advantage is that many of these products speed up the time that it takes your hair to dry, which can shave minutes off of your styling regimen, and they lock moisture in while you are making your hair look its best.
Consider Deep Conditioner
Although it is vital to condition your hair every time you wash it, sometimes a deep conditioner may be needed to restore moisture that is periodically lost from the wear and tear that your hair goes through on a daily basis. A deep conditioner can help to make your hair shiny and increase volume and elasticity. Not only does utilizing deep conditioner moisturize your hair strands, but it also moisturizes your scalp, which contributes to healthy, natural hair growth of stronger and silkier strands. Using deep conditioners regularly can also be a great protectant against damage to your hair as well. How often you should deep condition is dependent on your hair type, but a good rule of thumb is to aim for once a week.
Get Regular Haircuts or Trims
Your hairstylist always tells you that you need to come in once every two to three months for a trim, but many of us do not find the time to get to the salon more than twice a year. However, there are real benefits to regularly cutting, styling, and trimming your hair. Going long periods of time in between cuts is inviting your hair to develop split ends, which occur no matter how much you moisturize your hair as a natural result of hair growth. Additionally, getting the salon treatment will help keep your hair as healthy as possible. As a result, your hair will be more moisturized and better looking due to lack of split ends and high-end products, and your hair will thank you as a result.
Eat Foods that Encourage Moisture
Along with using products to moisturize and protect your hair, you can also give it a bonus of moisture and healthiness by incorporating foods into your diet to encourage growth and hydration. Leafy vegetables, such as spinach, broccoli, and kale, contain a myriad of vitamins like Vitamin A and Vitamin C. These vitamins help with sebum production, which in turn aids in moisturizing your hair. Foods that promote the health of your scalp are key in having overall healthy and beautiful hair, as it starts at the base and the hair follicle. Try to include more salmon and beef into your diet, as these proteins are extremely nutrient-dense. Oysters can aid in keeping your hair shiny. Lentils are a wonderful aid in oxygenating your scalp, due to the folic acid that they have. With these types of foods, you will also be inadvertently eating healthier, as well as treating your hair better.
Having hydrated and healthy hair does not have to be a challenging task. With these tips, and the right hair care regimen for your hair type and length, you are guaranteed to have hair that you are confident in and that you love.
