There are 22 bones in the skull, excluding the middle ear ossicles. Eight cranial bones (occipital bone, 2 temporal bones, 2 parietal bones, sphenoid bone, ethmoid bone, frontal bone), and fourteen facial bones (vomer, 2 conchae, 2 nasal bones, 2 maxillae, mandible, 2 palatine bones, 2 zygomatic bones, and 2 lacrimal bones). The middle ear contains three tiny bones known as the ossicles (malleus, incus, and stapes).

Note: some sources count the maxilla as one bone.
