Synopsis:
Dr. Steven Haase will share his personal experience with addiction and recovery, the DEA and his involvement with the Arizona State Dental Board’s monitoring program. He will use this first-hand experience to explore the many aspects of chemical dependency which can exist, not only within the confines of the dental practice, but outside the practice as well. Discussion topics will include the addiction process, drugs and their effects, the signs and symptoms of addiction, those affected and available treatment recommendations.
Description of Speaker:
Graduating from University of Kansas City Missouri School of Dentistry in 1988, Dr. Steven Haase arrived in Scottsdale Arizona three days later on a mission. That mission was to conquer the world of dentistry at any and all costs, and little did he know the costs. After a short but quick lesson in managed care dentistry, Dr. Haase opened a solo, fee for service practice from scratch and soon found himself attempting to provide dentistry and manage over 100 new fee for service patients per month. Mastering marketing and producing collection figures beyond belief, Dr. Haase worked twelve hour days to accommodate the insane schedule he kept and did whatever was necessary to keep the pace. Eventually selling a partnership and building another seven figure collection practice, he pushed it to a ledge of insanity of which he fell off.
This inspired his national lecture, “Conquering the Insanity” shared with thousands of dentists around the country teaching cosmetic, metal-free dentistry, practice management and methods to avoid that “ledge of insanity”. He’s been published in numerous dental journals and wrote the children’s book, “Visiting the Tooth Doctor”.
Dr. Haase retired in 2000 and channeled his perfectionism into a lucrative real estate and construction career. He has since been very active serving on the board of a large homeless group in Phoenix, Arizona. His candid but frank discussion outlining his own involvement with drug abuse and recovery is sure to leave many heads shaking and mouths open while offering a great deal of insight for doctors and staff to understand the current day reality of addiction, it’s cause and effects.
