Synopsis:
There are many patient factors that dental providers must consider before commencing treatment. In addition to patient factors, the dentist must always try to match the “rights” to maximize safety and efficacy when incorporating minimal sedation – the right dose of the right drug for the right patient and procedure. When this is accomplished, positive sedation outcomes are likely.

Selecting appropriate minimal sedation candidates is the first, and arguable the most critical step to ensuring a safe environment where dentistry can be completed. The challenge for providers is to collect accurate medical history information and synthesize it to determine suitability for minimal sedation. This challenge is complicated by an aging population who may have chronic diseases and take multiple medications. To make matters worse, not all patients are accurate historians or wholly forthcoming with their medical history information.

This course will review medical history taking techniques with an emphasis on evaluating patients for minimal sedation dentistry. The concepts of “medical clearance” versus “medical consultation” are discussed to help the practitioner understand how this information can benefit the dentist and patient. Patient examples are used to help guide the discussion, and current dental guidelines for common medical conditions are reviewed.

Educational Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:
  • Discuss the question, “Does ‘Medical Clearance’ from another provider shift liability for the treating dentist?”
  • Discuss American Society of Anesthesiologists’ Physical Status Classification and how to apply it
  • Discuss the challenges for obtaining an accurate medical history for patients
  • Review current dental guidelines for common medical conditions

Good info to help patient assessment. Dr. Goodchild knows how to simplify things and make someone learn and not let get side-tracked. Overall I recommend it. Also to the previous person who left comment, you can get the handout if you click on "course handout" tab, which is next to the "write a review" tab. Both in color blue and it kind of blends in.
