Over 4 million women in the Unites States are taking bisphosphonates and require dental treatment. Although dentists encounter these patients commonly, many are unsure of when treatment modifications are necessary to minimize morbidity. Newer anti-resorptive medications have entered the market and caused further confusion for dentists.
This course is designed to educate the dental practitioner on the implications of bisphosphonates in their practice. Evidence-based recommendations are provided to allow clinicians to know when treatment modifications are necessary for dental treatment. Specific attention is given to situations when dentoalveolar surgery should be avoided entirely. Dr. Fayette Williams (toofache32) covers this important topic comprehensively.
Description of Speaker:
Fayette Williams, DDS, MD, FACS is an oral & maxillofacial surgeon practicing in Fort Worth, Texas. He completed his DDS at the University of Tennessee and his MD and surgical residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. Dr. Williams then completed a 2-year fellowship in Maxillofacial Oncology and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Michigan. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, and is one of less than 30 oral surgeons in the USA who is fellowship-trained in both head & neck oncology and microvascular reconstruction. Dr. Williams maintains both an academic and private practice and is actively involved in training oral surgery residents from the UT Southwestern / Parkland Memorial Hospital residency in Dallas. Dr. Williams has authored multiple textbook chapters and journal articles and continues to pursue clinical research activities with his residents. He has lectured nationally on the surgical reconstruction of cancer-related defects. He has developed a surgical practice heavily weighted towards cancer patients, including those with complications from bisphosphonates. Dr. Williams is a regular and very popular poster on the Dentaltown message board known as toofache32.
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to achieve the following:

- Develop an office protocol to identify patients taking bisphosphonates and understand the implications in dental treatment.
- Review the role of pre-treatment drug holidays for a select group of patients taking bisphosphonates
- Identify patients who may (and may not) be candidates for extractions and/or implants.
- Understand the critical role of the general dentist in the treatment of patients with established osteonecrosis.
