Ever wonder how many hygienists think just like you? Hygienetown polls are an informal form of research, providing information about the attitudes, current clinical practices and preferences of dental hygienists today. True to the focus and mission of Hygienetown, the polls provide immediate information about our readers, allowing Townies to compare their responses to others and also provide current information for publication in this magazine. It’s your opportunity to participate in the research by adding your vote. After you’ve voted, you can see the total tally of votes so far and see immediately how many others match your choices.

Hygienetown poll information is used in several ways by clinicians, students and dental manufacturers. Clinicians compare their responses to others in similar situations, sometimes using the findings to make changes in their treatment protocols. Hygienists who want to introduce oral irrigation as a patient option for interproximal oral hygiene might consider presenting the Hygienetown oral irrigation poll showing that 85 percent of 200 respondents already do recommend oral irrigation and only 15 percent do not.

Schools use this information to determine what clinicians are doing after leaving school. I was delighted to find the Hygienetown instrumentation poll hung in the clinic of the beautiful new Forsythe School of Dental Hygiene in Boston, Massachusetts. Students were using this information as they learned instrumentation and patient care.

Dental manufacturers use the information to learn more about the dental hygienist as a purchaser. They learn what is important to hygienists and the problems hygienists face that they could solve with their products.

To read all past Hygienetown polls, simply click on the “Monthly Poll” link in the right-side menu on Hygienetown.com’s home page, and then a choice will appear below for “Previous Polls.”

The Polls are by no means exact science, but they do provide a snap shot of dental hygiene practice at the time. Add your input to the research by voting in the current HT Poll on Ergonomics. See you on www.hygienetown.com.
