Methamphetamine (Meth) abuse is on the rise and represents a problem that must be dealt with on a national level. Meth has a profound effect on the user's entire body including the oral cavity. As dental team members, we have an obligation to seek education on the symptoms of methamphetamine use and the precautions to take when treating the methamphetamine abuser. This course explores the history, physical and psychological effects, implications for dental team members and other topics related to the meth phenomenon.
Educational objectives: Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to achieve the following:
- Summarize the historical development of methamphetamine.
- Describe the ‘typical' meth user.
- Discuss the behavioral, physical, and psychological indicators observed in meth users.
- Identify the oral manifestations of meth use.
- Discuss the treatment modalities available for meth rehabilitation.
The New Approach to Caries Diagnosis and Treatment Speaker: Lori Trost, DMD
This discussion is a general overview of early diagnosis and the treatment of dental caries. This course explains the paradigm shift in the treatment approach to dental caries and how this has evolved in response to the current understanding of dental caries as an infectious disease. A more precise caries diagnosis and treatment methodology is introduced in combination with the current awareness of the demineralization and remineralization process. To conclude this program, risk assessment, caries management, and products are also shown that promote balance and reduce caries in the oral environment.
Educational objectives: Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to achieve the following:
- Modernize learning about dental caries as an infectious disease.
- Utilize contemporary caries detection methods.
- Gain a better understanding of the current demineralization and remineralization process of tooth structure.
- Become confident in practicing caries risk assessment, personalize caries management, and suggest products to promote remineralization.
