Do You Want to Buy a Cow?

Ever since I returned from India and published my experience volunteering for the Manjushree Orphanage, I've received quite a bit of Townie feedback! [Editor's Note: See pp. 22-23 of the March 2008 issue of Hygienetown] Some of you have indicated that you're interested in volunteering, while others have already embarked on similar projects in many places around the world. I'm sure many of you have thought about volunteering to contribute to a humanitarian venture like this one. I salute you all for your thoughts, efforts and donations to many valuable causes.

My trip to Tawang was indeed an adventure and a valuable life experience. It was gratifying to teach oral hygiene and prevention to the children. For most, this was their first experience with dentistry and dental hygiene. Lucky for me, it was a better experience for them than when they had to get vaccinated!
Volunteering is an experience you too can participate in, and you can do it on many levels. If you're interested in volunteering to help orphans in India or other places in the world that the Amrit Davaa World Health Corp. might go, simply visit www.amritdavaaworld.org, click on the “Volunteer” button then enter your information. As trips are organized, you will be contacted.

If you're not able to travel, you can also participate in the care, feeding and health of the children from your own home. Your financial donations can be designated to a variety of interesting options. You can buy (and name) a cow that will provide milk for the orphanage. Maybe you would rather buy a few chickens, to produce eggs for the children. If you're an avid gardener, you might consider purchasing a fruit tree or other plants for the orphanage. It's also possible to sponsor an individual child for a year with a donation of only $1 a day or $365 for the year.

Whether you participate with Amrit Davaa World Health Corp. or another foundation, your contributions of time and/or money are truly valued. With so many blessings in my life, I appreciate the opportunities to give back to the world to help others, especially helping to improve the oral health of children in orphanages.
