Synopsis: Radiation therapy is a commonly used modality to treat head and neck cancers. There are multiple side effects from this treatment which dentists and dental hygienists should understand, recognize, and be conversant in managing. Each of the most common side effects is discussed as well as preventing or minimizing their effects on health and well being of the patient. Management of the patient about to receive radiation therapy is also discussed in detail.

- Appreciate the ramifications to the orodental system of radiation therapy to the head and neck.
- Understand how to evaluate and prepare patients to withstand the rigors of radiation therapy to the head and neck.
- Understand and know how to prevent and/or minimize the deleterious side effects of radiation therapy to the head and neck.
- Be prepared to deal with patients who have previously received radiation therapy to the head and neck prior to coming under your care and know when and where to refer these people for care.
