A December 8, 1921, article by Fred R. Barnard in the advertising trade journal Printers' Ink, suggested using images in advertisements on the sides of streetcars. In that issue was an ad titled, "One Look is Worth A Thousand Words." Mr. Barnard claimed this concept was a Chinese proverb so people would take it seriously. Soon, the proverb was popularly attributed to Confucius. Others are also attributed with saying something similar, including the Russian writer Ivan Turgenev who wrote in Fathers and Sons, "A picture shows me at a glance what it takes dozens of pages of a book to expound." Even Napoleon Bonaparte was keen to the same idea when he said, "A good sketch is better than a long speech."

You get the idea. Posting photos of interesting cases, unusual teeth and strange phenomena on Hygienetown.com can save you hundreds of words and get your message across so well. It's a great way to post a question or ask for suggestions on how to treat specific cases. You can post the before and after photos of a case, or just a single photo that you find interesting. So many offices now have intraoral cameras, and snapping a photo is much easier than it used to be. Even cell phone cameras take great photos.
A dentist from Egypt posted a couple of photos of a mouth and asked if anyone would like to kiss this mouth? Those photos and discussion will be featured in next month's issue of Hygienetown Magazine.

Here are a couple pictures you might find interesting

1a & 1b: A series of images showing how plaque can be collected in the mouth for study in the lab.

2. Just imagine root planing the enamel pearls on this extracted tooth, if it were still in the mouth!

Please take photos of interesting things you find chairside and post them on www.hygienetown.com!
