DVD For Spanish-Speaking Children

DVD For Spanish-Speaking Children Helps Alleviate Fear of Dentistry and Teaches Proper Oral Hygiene
Posted: December 27, 2006

Fear the dentist?  Maybe.  Fear a crocodile puppet with human teeth?  Never.  Well … perhaps the thought of a chomping puppet may seem a bit bizarre, but for children who come from Spanish-speaking homes, this croc was a welcome site.

The crocodile is a prop in a newly released DVD aimed at Spanish-speaking children living in the United States. Spanish Dental Health Instructions, made possible in part by an educational grant from Proctor and Gamble (makers of Crest and Oral B), teaches Spanish-speaking children what happens in a dentist office, the clothing and tools dentists may use, how to care for their teeth, and what they can do at home to continue good oral hygiene.

It’s no secret that language barriers can negatively affect the care of non-English speaking residents in the United States.  Children are especially affected, as they often must translate for older members of their household.  This DVD is intended to educate the younger members of Spanish-speaking households from preschool age to teens. Using a classroom setting filled with Spanish props, presenter Dr. Liliana Rozo-Caicedo speaks entirely in Spanish to a small cluster of children, and uses simple yet effective strategies that Spanish-speaking children can relate to.

Eighteen minutes in length, Spanish Dental Health Instructions is ideal to play in a waiting area at dentist offices, public health departments, walk-in clinics, and for distribution to schools and community centers in areas with a high Spanish population.

A portion of the profits from Spanish Dental Health Instructions will go to the Dental Hygiene Program at the University of Louisville in Kentucky, which will support scholarships and advance program improvement.
