Colgate Total’s Patented Formula Provides a Sustained Antibacterial Effect

New York, NY (September 6, 2007) – The benefits of using oral care products that deliver antibacterial protection were recently underscored by the American Dental Association (ADA) in newly revised oral hygiene guidelines issued this May. Under the new guidelines, the ADA advises individuals to not only look for products with its seal of acceptance, but also for antibacterial products that can help prevent and reduce plaque and gingivitis.  Colgate Total® toothpaste is one of the few brands in America that meets the ADA’s new guidelines by providing an antibacterial ingredient in a toothpaste formulated to keep working for a full 12 hours against oral bacteria and gum inflammation.

Antibacterial oral care products offer additional oral health benefits by inhibiting bacteria that can cause plaque and gingivitis, according to guidelines issued in May by the ADA's Council on Scientific Affairs.   Colgate Total’s unique antibacterial formula works to protect the teeth and mouth from bacteria and plaque better than ordinary fluoride toothpaste.

As the first FDA approved and ADA-accepted toothpaste to fight gingivitis and plaque, Colgate Total® is encouraging dental health professionals and the public to understand the importance of the ADA announcement. The full statement can be found at www.ada.org.

“The fact is that not all toothpastes are the same,” said Fotinos S. Panagakos, DMD, PhD, Director of Professional Relations for Colgate. “An easy place to start to improve a patient’s oral health is with their toothpaste. Using a toothpaste with an antibacterial formula gives a boost to help fight off bacteria that form plaque more effectively than a regular fluoride toothpaste. With Colgate Total, the formula delivers 12-hour protection against plaque bacteria that can cause a range of oral health problems, including gingivitis, which may develop into more serious gum disease if left untreated.”

The patented Colgate Total® formula has an antibacterial effect that lasts up to 12 hours, fighting plaque bacteria on contact and helps prevent bacteria from building up on the teeth and gums in between brushing.  Colgate Total’s 12-hour protective shield helps guard against plaque, tartar build up, gum inflammation and a range of other oral health issues.  In more than a dozen clinical studies, Colgate Total has been proven to significantly reduce gingivitis and plaque versus ordinary fluoride toothpaste.

“Dental plaque can be removed with brushing, but within two hours of cleaning the bacteria return,” said Dr. Sebastian G. Ciancio, Professor & Chair of the Department of Periodontics & Endodontics at the University at Buffalo, SUNY. “The antibacterial formulation of Colgate Total reduces the level of bacteria and plaque build-up on the tooth surface in between brushings, and therefore, protects the mouth for an extended time period.  Today, we’re learning more and more about how important it is to maintain healthy teeth and gums.  Using oral care products that effectively fight plaque bacteria makes good health sense.”

The recent ADA announcement expands on the authority’s daily oral hygiene recommendations that individuals should “brush twice a day with an ADA-Accepted fluoride toothpaste; clean between their teeth daily with an ADA-Accepted floss or ADA-Accepted interdental cleaner; eat a balanced diet and limit between meal snacks; and visit their dentist regularly for professional cleanings and oral examinations” for optimal oral health.
