VIOlight® Inc. Publishes New White Paper:
“The Role of Ultraviolet Light in Keeping a Germ-Free Toothbrush”

White Paper Emphasizes the Effectiveness of Ultraviolet Radiation
For Toothbrush Sanitation

Yonkers, New York (June 26, 2009) – VIOlight Inc., the leader in ultraviolet light toothbrush sanitizers, announced today the availability of a white paper emphasizing the role of ultraviolet radiation, or UV-C light, as an effective bactericidal for the toothbrush.

“Many people do not realize just how ‘dirty’ their toothbrushes are in terms of the number and variety of potentially infectious germs that reside among each and every bristle,” remarked company founder Joel Pinsky. “Most of us would not think to use a dirty fork again after a simple rinse.  So why do we nonchalantly give our toothbrush a quick rinse and reuse it over and over again?”

The white paper, entitled “The Role of Ultraviolet Light in Keeping a Germ-Free Toothbrush,” details research that confirms the presence of numerous potentially harmful microorganisms on toothbrushes, many that are freely distributed with each flush of the toilet.  It’s when these environmental pathogens are introduced to the mouth during regular brushing that problems arise.

“Knowing the many bacterial strains that are present in virtually all bathrooms, and knowing that regular and thorough cleaning of the bathroom does not entirely eliminate these pathogens, we must look at ways to reduce the opportunity for these bacteria to enter our bodies via our toothbrushes,” explained Pinsky.

The white paper also explains the relatively new use of ultraviolet radiation that utilizes UV light as an effective and safe method to kill germs, without the use of dangerous chemicals.  When a UV-C light is switched on and is used for sanitizing and purifying matter such as water, hard surfaces, or in VIOlight’s case, toothbrushes, the rays effectively strike the various microorganisms, and the radiation reaches the “heart” of the organisms - their DNA.

causing abrupt modification and rearrangement of the cell’s genetic information.  This action interferes with the cell’s ability to reproduce.  Therefore, the germs are not physically removed but are completely “inactivated,” thus rendering them harmless and no longer able to cause infection.

“Using the proven germicidal power of UV-C light, the VIOlight toothbrush sanitizer effectively decontaminates and kills 99% of all pathogens that reside on our toothbrushes,” continued Pinsky “After reading the extraordinary information contained in this white paper, I think most dental professionals will think differently about using a toothbrush that is simply rinsed, as opposed to using an effective, easy-to-use toothbrush sanitizer each time they brush.”

This white paper is VIOlight’s latest step in its continuing effort to help educate dental professionals and the public about the importance of toothbrush sanitation. About the Violight Toothbrush Sanitizer

The VIOlight is an easy-to-use, compact toothbrush holder that requires only the push of a button to operate. A toothbrush (or toothbrushes, depending on the model) is inserted into the VIOlight canister after use; the button is pressed, and the unit projects UV-C light onto the toothbrush head, bristles, and handle for 10 minutes. The unit is designed so that the UV-C rays are concentrated and focused downward onto the bristles, allowing minimal light to escape the unit and therefore preventing exposure to UV light when in use. A study conducted by an independent microbiological laboratory, as well as another conducted at the New York University College of Dentistry, revealed that after ten minutes of exposure to the UV-C light, 99% of all pathogens are destroyed, and the toothbrush(es) is sanitized, germ-free, and ready to use again.
