Dry Mouth Tops List of Oral Health Issues; Can Lead to Other Problems if Left Untreated

In a survey for OraMoist™ Dry Mouth Patch, commissioned by Quantum Health and conducted by Harris Interactive® , results showed that dry mouth rated in the top three most common oral health conditions (at 19%), just slightly behind cavities (20%) and tied with bad breath (19%). Interestingly, though, says Chris Kammer, D.D.S., dry mouth is hugely under-diagnosed and is often not dealt with as the serious medical condition that it is on a daily basis.

“Dry mouth seems benign, but it is a real problematic health condition that can have a devastating effect on your oral health, prompting tooth decay, gum disease and bad breath due to a lack of oral moisture,” explains Dr. Kammer, who is a nationally-recognized dentist and founding member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD). “Saliva plays a huge role in protecting the mouth and teeth, reducing bacteria, helping digestion and more, so a person who doesn’t have the proper level of moisture can have severe consequences over time.”

Dry mouth is exceptionally common and it is often caused by medical conditions, such as diabetes or Sjogren’s syndrome, or, more commonly, from taking prescription and/or over-the-counter medicines. In fact, people taking three or more medications have a 60% chance of suffering from dry mouth, making this a problem for many older adults.

“The issue is that dry mouth isn’t typically painful like a toothache or canker sore. It’s just a nuisance initially, so unless it’s acute, many sufferers tend to just ‘live with it,’ not realizing there are unique solutions now available,” says Dr. Kammer. “The OraMoist Dry Mouth Patch is a completely new approach. It is a time-released, muco-adhesive patch that
adheres to the roof of the mouth or inside the cheek, dissolving over time and releasing natural active ingredients that help increase saliva production and moisten the mouth for several hours.”

Unlike dry mouth sprays that need to be applied very frequently – sometimes every 20 minutes – this unique patch works to increase moisture and to help restore a healthy oral environment for hours at a time, day or night, and can even be used by those with dental appliances, such as dentures.

The OraMoist Dry Mouth Patch has been clinically proven effective in terms of increased saliva production and improved feeling of moistness. A study conducted at the New York University College of Dentistry demonstrated that OraMoist significantly increased saliva production and improved patient comfort and satisfaction.

OraMoist Dry Mouth Patch is powered by natural active ingredients including natural lipids, oral enzymes, calcium carbonate and natural lemon to stimulate saliva production and inhibit bacterial growth. It also has xylitol, a natural sweetener proven to reduce cavities and gum disease. OraMoist is sugar and alcohol-free, and is ph balanced to maintain the normal acidity in the mouth.
