Description of Speaker:
Linda Douglas, RDH graduated from the Royal Dental Hospital of Dental Hygiene in London, England, and currently resides in Toronto, Canada. She is a regular contributor to the Hygienetown.com message boards and has authored a Hygienetown.com online continuing education course on xerostomia management. She has also published articles on xerostomia management and oral cancer screening in Vital, a British Dental Journal Continuing Education publication and on Dentinal Tubules, a UK dental continuing education website.
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to achieve the following:
- Discuss the functions of saliva and the factors that influence salivary output.
- Pro-actively assess patients for risk of salivary gland hypofunction
- Discuss current diagnostic techniques for salivary gland hypofunction and related pathologies
- Describe evidence-based components of a clinical maintenance protocol and self-care regimen that would be beneficial for xerostomic patients.
- Discuss current research on saliva testing for oral and systemic disease.
