LOS ANGELES/Englewood, CO—September 4, 2007—1-800-DENTIST®, the nation’s leading free resource for consumers in search of a dentist, has presented the 4th annual 1-800-DENTIST Cares award to Dr. Damien Mulvany of Englewood, Colorado. “As a company, we promote how dentistry can change people’s lives. It is an honor to have a dentist like Dr. Mulvany who is carrying on that mission in his area and in the other places around the world,” said Fred Joyal, CEO of  1-800-DENTIST. “His efforts are a great example of how one person can make a difference.”
Dr. Mulvany’s notable achievements include volunteering with several charitable causes in Colorado as well as abroad. Outside of his regular hours at his practice, he has served as dentist and as a mentor at the Urban Peak Shelter since 1998. The shelter provides care for homeless teens and covers all of their basic needs, including medical and dental screening. He regularly provides teens with orthodontia and absorbs the cost. He also sponsors a team of volunteers who lead activities and build relationships with the residents at Mount Saint Vincent Home, a group home that treats children with emotional and behavioral problems.
“I am passionate about helping children and families in need and feel truly blessed to be able to use my training and skills as a dentist to help as many as I can,” said Dr. Mulvany. “Bringing a smile to someone’s face is worth every effort. Whether it is in my neighborhood or abroad, every person matters and should be helped.” Dr Mulvany in Africa (WinCE).jpg
The doctor’s passion for giving back is apparent in his ongoing work with the International Medical Relief (IMR) organization. In this capacity, he has taken teams with him to provide dental care to the impoverished. Along with Dr. Sloan Hildebrand of Dallas, TX, Dr. Mulvany was the first to treat people in the village of Djorbival in Senegal, the sub-Saharan region of Africa. For the next three years, he made Africa his mission destination by returning twice to Djorbival and Kersambua, and then on to Anole and Garissa in Kenya.
Dr. Mulvany has won numerous awards over the years but remains a humble member of the dental and local community. He has shown himself to be a strong advocate of both continuing education and missionary dentistry. As the 2007 award winner, 1-800-DENTIST is donating $500 to the Urban Peak shelter, Dr. Mulvany’s charity of choice.
Over 50 dentists were nominated by their office teams for consideration. Voted on by the employees of 1-800-DENTIST, all candidates must meet three basic criteria. The recipient must be: (1) a humanitarian who selflessly gives back to their community; (2) devoted to promoting the field of dentistry; and (3) an active member of the 1-800-DENTIST program.
