Synopsis:
Along with selecting the right patients for minimal sedation, picking the right drugs at the right doses for each individual, and having a properly trained sedation team, appropriate monitoring of patients is another key part of providing safe sedation treatment. For minimal sedation specifically, the monitoring of patients involves direct assessment and observation of vital signs.

The direct assessment of minimal sedation patients is further broken down into visual and verbal assessment. In accordance with the definition of minimal sedation, patients who are properly sedated should be conscious, capable of maintaining their own airway without assistance, and responsive to verbal commands. By always having a trained individual watching patients and using short closed-end questions providers can continuously verify the level of sedation and maintain a safe environment.

The vital signs that must be monitored during minimal sedation include blood pressure, pulse, and oxygen saturation. Utilization of pulse oximetry has become the standard of care for minimal sedation and while inexpensive and reliable, it is vital to understand how to effectively use and interpret the readings. In addition, troubleshooting potential errors with pulse oximetry is important.

When combined, visual assessment and continuous vital signs observation provides the needed information to safely monitor minimal sedation patients.

Educational Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:
  • Discuss the essential parts of patient monitoring for minimal sedation
  • Discuss how a pulse oximeter functions and how to interpret the readings
  • Compare different types of pulse oximeters to help practitioners select the right monitor
  • Discuss potential sources of error for pulse oximetry and how to troubleshoot to achieve accurate readings
  • Discuss other types of physiologic monitoring equipment that may be used to monitor sedation patients
