Schick Technologies has developed the CMOS APS x-ray imaging technology utilized in CDR® Wireless, the world's first wireless direct digital dental sensor. This product is ideally suited for dentistry as there are tremendous advantages in this technology for both dentists and patients.
Dentists have a particularly strong motivation to adopt digital radiography. Radiographic examinations are an integral part of routine dental checkups and the dentist is directly involved in the film development process. The use of digital radiography eliminates delays in film processing, thus increasing the dentist's potential revenue stream and efficiency while reducing overhead expenses. The use of digital radiography also allows dentists to more effectively communicate diagnoses and treatment plans to patients and to easily store and display patients' previous dental x-ray images, which has the potential to increase the rate of patients' treatment acceptance and resulting revenues. The radiation dosage required to produce an intra-oral dental x-ray, which is high when compared with other medical radiographs, can be reduced by up to 80% through the use of digital radiography.
The advantage that will sell the device to patients is the fact that the Schick digital dental imager is much smaller than competing technologies, thus increasing patient comfort level, a very desirable thing given the general trepidation and discomfort too many people associate with visiting the dentist. Also, Traditional dental sensors have a wire, which is used to convey information from the sensor to the computer. This wire can be uncomfortable to and annoying for the patient. The wire can also limit the placement of the sensor within the patient's mouth. The new wireless product allows unprecedented freedom of movement, simplified sensor placement, and improved patient comfort. Images are instantly and automatically transmitted from the mouth to the computer via a radio frequency (RF) link.
Frost & Sullivan's 2005 Digital Radiography Technology Leadership of the Year Award goes to Schick for defining an industry standard, and capturing a commanding portion of their fast-growing markets.
