Fighting Cold & Flu

FIGHTING COLD AND FLU SEASON IS AS EASY AS 1, 2, 3.
Posted: January 21, 2006
This winter, the convergence of cold and flu season makes the battle
between humans and the microscopic world more evident with every cough,
runny nose and itchy throat. The good news is, for those of us who can't
remain isolated from the rest of the world this winter, there are ways to help
protect yourself and your family from the spread of dangerous germs and
bacteria.

Jean Fleming, Infection Control Expert with Nice-Pak Products, Inc. says that
despite ominous warnings about the "super-flu" or avian flu, as well as federal
spending in the billions to prepare for the next flu pandemic, people can take
precautions.

"Staying healthy during flu season is not impossible," says Fleming and offer
several tips on how to avoid getting sick.  "One of the most important things
to remember is to properly clean your hands often, as well as the surfaces in
your workplace and at home."

Germs, according to the Centers for Disease Control, are most often spread
through contact with contaminated surfaces.  These surfaces include
everything from doorknobs, telephones, kitchen and countertops, to diaper-
changing surfaces, computer keyboards and desktops. On average, most
people touch over 300 surfaces every 30 minutes, and the flu virus can live
up to eight hours on some of these surfaces. Proper hand washing and
cleaning of common surfaces are two preventative ways to avoid contact
with some allergens and help stop the spread of cold and flu-causing germs.

Headquartered in Orangeburg, NY, and with manufacturing facilities in New
York, Indiana, and around the world, 50 year-old Nice-Pak is the global leader
in pre-moistened wipes.  The company manufactures baby wipes,
antibacterial hand cleaning towelettes, personal hygiene wipes, surface
disinfecting wipes, and other hygienic products under the Sani-Dex, Sani-
Cloth, Sani-Surface brands, to name a few.  Several of these contain an EPA-
registered disinfectant that has been tested and proven to kill Escherichia coli
(commonly referred to as "E. coli"), Salmonella choleraesuis (commonly
referred to as "Salmonella"), Staphylococcus aureus (commonly referred to
as "Staph"), Influenza A2/HK (the common flu virus) and Pseudomonas
aeruginosa.

TIPS ON HOW TO AVOID COLD AND FLU SEASON

This is the time of year when cold and flu grip your community and stress
health resources. PDI wants to remind you that a few precautions can help
prevent the spread of cold and flu germs:

*Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze

*Sanitize your hands with Sani-Dex® ALC Alcohol Gel Hand Wipes when soap
and water isn't readily available. In a clinical study, Sani-Dex® ALC
demonstrated superior performance over a rub-in alcohol handwash gel by
removing bacteria and soil. The physical wiping action is functional in reducing
microbial population on the hand.

*Keep your work surface disinfected with Super Sani-Cloth® or Sani-Cloth®
Plus Germicidal Wipes. Super Sani-Cloth® and Sani-Cloth® Plus are market
leading surface disinfectant wipes and have been tested effective against
organisms including: Hepatitus C Virus (HCV), Hepatitius B Virus (HBV), RSV,
Rhinovirus, Influenza A2/Hong Kong, MRSA and VRE.
