New from Great Lakes Orthodontics, the Phillips HeartStart Onsite Defibrillator, an automated external defibrillator (AED), is designed for the ordinary person who is faced with an extraordinary situation.  Phillips, the leader in defibrillation technology, designed the HeartStart Onsite Defibrillator so that a minimally trained lay responder can help save a life.  Defibrillators provide the only effective treatment for sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), a leading cause of death in the United States.

According to the American Heart Association (AHA), sudden cardiac arrest claims the lives of more than 340,000 people each year in the U.S. alone.  Today, fewer than five percent of SCA victims survive, largely because defibrillators do not reach them in time.  If defibrillation is performed up to one minute after collapse, there is a 90% recovery rate; at three minutes after collapse, there is a 70% recovery rate; at seven minutes after collapse, the estimated save rate drops to 20%.  If emergency medical services arrive ten minutes after collapse, the recovery rate is negligible.

Defibrillators are fast becoming a mandatory requirement in public buildings, office buildings, schools, and community centers.  In dental offices, inclusion of an AED is becoming standard and in some states, mandated by law.

HeartStart is compact and easy to use.  Weighing only 3.3 lbs., the defibrillator can be carried to the patient’s side.  Using clear, natural voice instructions, the OnSite Defibrillator guides the responder through each step of defibrillation and CPR, even reminding them to call for emergency help.  Integrated SMART Pad technology senses a responder’s actions and automatically adjusts the pace of the voice instructions to match the responder’s needs.  Additionally, the HeartSmart Onsite Defibrillator can be used on infants and children with specially designed infant/child pads that reduce the amount of energy to an appropriate level.
