Remi Dental Products Inc has introduced Remi Grip, an innovative device that simplifies sharpening of instruments during procedures. The patent-pending instrument features an all-in-one sharpening stone and mouth-mirror that lets the user choose from a variety of ergonomic handle styles and stone types.

"Sharpening instruments during periodontal therapies has been cumbersome, time-consuming and depends on the availability of a sterile sharpening stones," said Mimi Sommers, RDH, founder of Remi Dental. Sharper instruments reduce hand fatigue because less force is required, resulting in greater patient comfort and less burnished calculus. "With the Remi Grip, procedures finish faster, leaving more time for patient education," said Sommers, who invented the Remi Grip based on her own challenges with sharpening.

The Remi Grip is manufactured to the highest standards, and fits neatly alongside other instruments in an autoclave pouch. The Remi Grip's interchangeable sharpening stone connects to the mouth mirror handle, and the entire device autoclaves as one, providing a sterile stone for every patient. Anna Pattison, RDH, MS, one of the foremost authorities in dental hygiene, feels the Remi Grip is "a great concept that should encourage hygienists to sharpen more often and more efficiently.

"The Remi Grip's proprietary stone sharpens with fewer strokes and is virtually residue free. Kathleen Reynolds, an RDH from San Diego, used the Remi Grip correctly on her first try. "It's completely intuitive," she said. "What a convenient way to sharpen."

The Remi Grip also provides benefits to dentists. Patients complain, "my hygienist scrapes too hard". By using the Remi Grip occasionally during procedures, hygienists can alleviate patient discomfort by effortlessly removing calculus, increasing patient satisfaction, retention and referrals. Dentists also benefit from higher hygienist job satisfaction. "Rather than spend $500 to $1000 on a mechanical sharpener that never gets used, I can arm my hygienists with several Remi Grips, and invest in innovative devices that my people will actually use," said Dr. Sabine Purps, DDS. "The Remi Grip is an affordable device that I can give my hygienists to stay ahead of the curve."
