Annual Smile Contest celebrates 20 years of oral health education at state fair Floss at the Fair giveaway in fifth year
Children, from newborns to 16 years of age, are invited to compete for the title of “best smile” at the Wisconsin Dental Association’s (WDA) 20th annual Smile Contest on Friday, Aug. 10 at the Wisconsin State Fair.
Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Funjet Fun Stage presented by 99.1 WMYX in the Wisconsin Exposition Center. An entertaining and educational “Flossy La Tooth” show that will teach children the value of good oral health habits takes the stage at noon.
Contest judging begins at 1 p.m. with first, second and third place prizes awarded in seven age categories and a special “tin grin” competition for children with braces. Each of the first 300 participants will also receive a collection of personal oral health products and educational items.
This year’s Smile Contest is made possible through generous donations of oral health products, prizes and financial support from Delta Dental of Wisconsin, Dental Health Products Inc., D&S Dental Lab Inc., Patterson Dental Supply, Procter & Gamble/Crest, Saber Dental Studio, Sullivan-Schein Dental, Sunstar Butler, WDA Insurance Programs Inc. and the WDA Foundation.
The first annual Smile Contest was held Aug. 12, 1988 at the Wisconsin State Fair and drew nearly 200 participants. It was co-sponsored by the WDA and its dental spouse alliance. This group supported the profession through educational and political efforts before disbanding in 2001.
The WDA and the New Berlin Lions Club are cooperating for the fifth year to promote WDA Floss at the Fair on Aug. 10 beginning at 11 a.m. near the club’s main corn roast tent. Marquette University School of Dentistry students will distribute more than 4,000 complimentary travel-size containers of dental floss to corn roast patrons thanks to the generosity of Delta Dental of Wisconsin, Oral-B and Patterson Dental Supply.
The WDA Floss at the Fair program also is coming to the Buffalo County Fair at the Mondovi Conservation Club booth Aug. 2 – 5 and to the Holmen Kornfest fairgrounds Aug.18 – 19.
Established in 1870, the WDA is headquartered in West Allis. With more than 2,900 members statewide, it represents the vast majority of practicing dentists in Wisconsin. For more information on the WDA, call 414-276-4520 or visit www.wda.org <http://www.wda.org/> .
