Phase2Gel Pseudoplastic Color-Changing Dental Alginate

Dental alginate is used in nearly every dental office in the world. Alginate is relatively inexpensive and it generally works pretty well, so once an office settles on a brand, they can safely put it out of their mind and get on with important issues- exciting things like lasers and digital x-rays.
Dental alginate should do two things. It should take good impressions and it should resist flowing so much that it gags the patient. The problem is that these two goals are in conflict.
In order to take a good impression, the alginate must flow readily when the tray is being placed in the mouth.
The better if flows, the more it displaces the inevitable air bubbles in and around the teeth. More flow equals fewer bubbles and a better impression. The problem is that more flow means more problems with patient gagging (or worse).
Some dental alginate companies have decided to go with a thinnish mix that flows well. Other companies have decided to market more heavy-bodied alginates to minimize gagging. Still other companies try to reach a theoretical balance between these two extremes. These are all reasonable solutions. Dentists generally try several different materials early in their careers and settle on one that “works for them”.
Accu-Cast Dental has been working on another solution to this problem and the result is a product called Phase2Gel Dental Alginate. Phase2Gel is the world’s first “pseudoplastic” dental alginate. Pseudoplasticity is a term used in rheology (the study of fluid flow) to describe a fluid that actually changes its viscosity in response to stress or agitation. The viscosity of a pseudoplastic fluid actually lowers (more flow) when this fluid is put under “shear stress” (pushed on) and then immediately regains its viscosity when the shear stress is removed.
What this means is that Phase2Gel is thick when in the loaded tray, reduces its viscosity during the placement of the tray, and then immediately regains its thickness. It flows when you want it to, but not when you don’t. A patent is being sought for this innovation.
Phase2Gel is also a chromatic or “color-changing” formula. The alginate powder is white, but immediately turns bright pink when mixed with water. During the pink phase, the operator mixes the alginate and loads the tray. The pink fades to white in approximately 1 minute and 40 seconds. When it turns white, the operator places the tray in the mouth. The impression should be ready for removal approximately 30 seconds later. This innovation allows the operator to place the tray in the mouth at the correct time so it is not in the patient’s mouth longer than it needs to be. This can be much more comfortable for the patient and minimizes the chances of a gagging incident.
Phase2Gel Dental Alginate is also sold directly to the dental office from the manufacturer. This eliminates the dental supply company markup and allows Phase2Gel to be sold at the low price of just $7.95 per pound. Offices that order 5 or more pounds at a time can receive additional discounts. Ordering is very simple by going
