American Dental Association (ADA) witnesses will testify today and tomorrow before a U.S. Food and Drug Administration Advisory Panel investigating the safety of dental amalgam, a silver colored material that is among the options patients and their dentists can use to restore decayed teeth.

This afternoon Dr. J. Rodway Mackert will explain the flaws in research published by Dr. Mark Richardson and being offered by those seeking to ban amalgam as bolstering their case. Dr. Mackert has stated that he finds the Richardson paper “ludicrous,” and will provide the scientific basis for his view to the panel today. Dr. Mackert is a professor at the Medical College of Georgia, School of Dentistry. He holds a dental degree, as well as a PhD in materials science engineering, and has engaged in dental materials research and teaching for 30 years.

Tomorrow morning Dr. Jonathan Knapp, a general dentist and member of the ADA Council on Dental Practice, will explain why dental amalgam remains an important option for his patients to consider for treating dental decay.

Dr. Knapp and Dr. Mackert are both on site at the panel hearing and available for interviews.
