What is the active ingredient of Arestin?

  1. Doxycycline hyclate
  2. Chlorhexidine
  3. Minocycline
  4. All of the above combined

Answer: C. Minocycline

The following are some of the most commonly-used locally-applied antimicrobial agents, along with their active ingredients:

- Arestin - minocycline (a tetracycline antibiotic)

- Periochip - chlorhexidine

- Atridox - doxyclycline hyclate (a tetracycline antibiotic)

Arestin, Atridox, and Periochip are all placed in the deepest part of a diseased pocket and are left to dissolve on their own.

Note: Atridox and Arestin can be confusing. Let’s memorize “ARM” - “ARestin” is “Minocycline.” Then we know Atridox is made of the other antibacterial agent, doxycycline.
