TEACHING METHODOLOGY
AND
PERIODONTAL INSTRUMENTATION CAMPS
JANUARY 12 - 14, 2007
Day One:
participants receive a teaching methodology course that will prepare them to provide current classroom and clinical teaching techniques. This Day One component is a prerequisite to days two through three. It meets the American Dental Association Commission on Accreditation (ADA CODA) requirements for Standard 3-7.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:
-
Describe and utilize learning style inventories
-
Discuss the current philosophy of education
-
State methods for calibrating faculty for clinical education
-
Define the critical thinking terms and apply them to teaching and testing strategies
-
Create case based simulations for teaching and testing formats
-
Describe objective evaluation systems and clinical practicums
-
Demonstrate the ability to give written and verbal feedback in a manner that facilitates the students’ development of clinical skills
-
Prepare a classroom lecture presentation on periodontal instrumentation prior to the hands-on clinical demonstration
Day Two:
will include a step by step presentation on how to teach with the textbook, “Fundamentals of Periodontal Instrumentation & Advanced Root Instrumentation”. The course includes demonstration sessions followed by one-on-one “hands-on” instruction on dental manikins. Each class will be limited to a 1:6 ratio of presenter to participants, so that the individual needs of each participant can be met. Mock corroborative error practicums will be conducted as an activity session for utilization of this format for instructor calibration sessions. The format is used by examiners on state board clinical examinations.
Course Objective:
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:
-
Demonstrate techniques for teaching psychomotor skills and periodontal instrumentation according to the textbook “Fundamentals of Periodontal Instrumentation & Advanced Root Instrumentation”
-
Demonstrate the ability to use a methodical approach to critiquing student instrumentation skills and giving accurate instructions for perfecting skills.
-
Demonstrate the ability to conduct a corroborative error practicum for preclinic
-
Describe the methods for ascertaining that students are maintaining instrumentation skills throughout the curriculum.
Day Three:
This workshopwill include the presentation of an objective format for evaluation of students in the “Dental Hygiene Process of Care”, (ADA CODA Standard 2-19). The format will be presented to prepare participants to use for all the following: instructor calibration, student performance, outcomes assessments, and quality assurance. An Outcomes Assessment Plan will be presented to assist the participants with their individual plans for conducting outcomes assessments for ADA CODA Standard 1-1. The outcomes assessment plan includes a quality assurance plan that meets the ADA CODA Standard 6-1. A legal document for remediation of failing students will be explained and given to participants to use in their student remediation sessions.
Lastly a procedure for conducting curriculum workshops will be demonstrated to assist participants with their own curriculum workshops for ADA CODA Standard 2-4
-
Describe the methods for conducting remediation sessions with students who are not developing and maintaining clinical skills throughout the progression of their clinical education.
-
Describe an effective, objective evaluation process for “the dental hygiene process of care” as required by ADA CODA Standard 2-19
-
Design an outcomes assessment plan that will meet the requirements of the ADA CODA Standard 1-1
-
Design a quality assurance plan for the dental hygiene clinic
-
Design a curriculum workshop to meet individual program needs for ADA CODA Standard 2-4
