How To Use Essential Oils To Boost Your Health and Live Naturally

Essential oils have been around for a long time, and are commonly associated with alternative forms of therapy, like aroma therapy. While some may have heard of essential oils, or may even use them from time to time, many aren't aware of all the things that they could be using essential oils for on a daily basis. If you're looking for ways to boost your health and keep your home maintained in a way that is natural, here are a few things you can try.

What Are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are the compounds extracted from certain plants. To extract these compounds, or essences, a steam distillation process is often used, or if distillation isn't used, a mechanical extraction process is. During this process, the goal is to successfully capture the scent of the plant. These oils have been in use for centuries, and are frequently documented as being used for a variety of health and beauty purposes in many ancient civilizations. Essential oils like Young Living Essential Oils are commonly used in aromatherapy, and are often applied to the skin, however they are generally not meant to be ingested.

Popular Essential Oils and Their Uses

One of the most popular essential oils in use today is lavender essential oil. Because lavender has calming properties, it is often used to reduce anxiety, calm the nervous system, reduce insomnia, and any situation where a relaxing effect is desired. Chamomile is another essential oil that is frequently used for its relaxing properties, sometimes in conjunction with lavender. Lemon is another popular essential oil, however unlike lavender or chamomile it is energizing, and is therefore used in situations where you would like to boost your mood, feel more energetic, or focused. Because of some of its antibacterial properties, it is also used frequently for cleaning around the home. Tea tree oil is another essential oil that is used frequently for a variety of purposes, but is most commonly used to help take care of things like skin infections and acne, because of its healing and antimicrobial properties.

Using Essential Oils for Relaxation

Whatever essential oils you prefer to use, one of the most common ways that essential oils are used in general is as a way to boost relaxation. There can be many ways to use essential oils to relax. One popular way is to use them in an essential oil diffuser, where you add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to some water, and then it fills the room with a scented mist. Another common way to use essential oils for relaxation is to dab them directly on your skin. Typically, they are either applied to the temples, or the skin on the wrist. Applying them on the temples is also a good option for those that are experiencing a headache, or a migraine. Yet another way to use them for relaxation is to add them to a bath. With a bath, you can often use more than a few drops because it will take more to adequately scent your bath. Because of this, you can have more fun with your essential oils and try using multiple oils at the same time, and create blends that you enjoy.

Keeping Pests Away With Essential Oils

In addition to being relaxing, essential oils can be useful for keeping pests out of your home, as well. Essential oils for keeping bugs away can be used in a variety of forms. You can simply add them to your diffuser, or you can make a spray with them, as well as things like candles and lotion bars. If you need to keep away ants, peppermint and spearmint can be two effective options. If you want to stay mosquito free when you're outdoors, lemongrass, lavender, and citronella can all be good options. Cedarwood can be beneficial if you're looking to keep moths at bay, and it can also help keep other pests away as well, like ticks, fleas and mites.

Making Your Own Beauty Products With Essential Oils

Another fun way to add essential oils into your daily routine is to make beauty products with them. This can be especially good for those that are looking to go a more natural route when it comes to the products they use on their body. Essential oils can be used in homemade soap bars, lotions, shampoos and conditioners. They can also be used in home made chapsticks and deodorants as well.

Cleaning With Essential Oils

Essential oils can also be an important component of cleaning your home naturally, as well. One common way that many clean with essential oils is to blend their chosen essential oils with a mix of distilled water and white vinegar. Lemon essential oil, as well as other citrus essential oils are commonly used for their antibacterial properties and fresh smell. When mixed with vinegar water, they can be a good all-purpose cleaner that can be used on a variety of surfaces, like countertops and glass.

The Bottom Line

Essential oils have been in use since ancient times, and still continue to be popular to this day. Not only do essential oils smell great, but they also have therapeutic properties, and can be great components of living a healthy, natural lifestyle, too. So, whether you're looking for something to help you relax, or would like some more natural options when it comes to your beauty and cleaning products, essential oils can be a useful option.
